The Day the Music Died #flashfiction

To say music was “my life” was an understatement.

From dawn to dusk I sang the songs my heart wrote.

When I lost my voice, my fingers became one with  the keyboard.

My brother dismantled my keyboard; the guts were strewn like a dissonant message from my room to the instrument.

“You killed the song in my head,” I screamed in the key of C.

I was cut on a metal shard, bloodied notes fell to the floor.

I refused to let him take credit for the score written in red that day.

That score became a famous Dark Mass.

Today’s dismantled keyboard is the prompt for Friday Fictioneers. Wishing Rochelle a Happy 1 year celebration as the conductor of the Friday Fictioneers

  1. I wasn’t quite sure what flash fiction was,so I did what anyone in my situation would attempt,a visit to the knowledge book. a palm-sized story, which takes as much time to read as to smoke a cigarette.Impressive. Since I don’t smoke it’s difficult to know if yours is a palm-sized story. I did enjoy reading it.

    1. Ha or less. Flash fiction started I believe as a short story written in 55 words. There are many varieties now. I was part of a flash or micro fiction that was 160 characters (including spaces). One thing Flash Fiction will do for a writer is hone their skill and make the writer less wordy. You should try it!!!
Smiles for your day my friend

  2. Your title invoked “Bye Bye Miss American Pie” in my head. Perhaps because this will be the day that he dies. I love that she screamed in the key of C. He really shouldn’t have touched her keyboard. Clever story.

      1. “…the key of C” was a great line. And the “bloody notes that fell to the floor.” Good stuff.
Wow, blogging five years, that’s a great track record.

  3. Dear Leslie,

Am I to assume the Dark Mass is her brother? It makes me wonder what key I scream in. Probably L-flat. So, bye bye, Miss American Pie, drove my Chevy to the Levy….

  4. This is almost two different stories, darling — about half way through it takes a turn, even in the language used — very interesting.

  5. This post made me think of Linda Ronstadt; having just lost her voice to Parkinson’s. The idea of losing your gift. I got a little lost with the shift in story, from the narrator’s private story, and then the brother… not sure I understood that part.

  6. . Ain’t no ange limit on gorgeous. They have som fine old ass out here that can take them denurtes out n rick your world. Sanaa belongs on this post . Thank u.
