Without A Song #music #poetry #haiku

guitar

If I could write a song for you it would go something like this:

Without fingers to stroke

without a voice to sing

these instruments stand

with little meaning

***

but there was a day

that we’d  dance

and we’d play

long into the midnight hours

***

memories alone

warm these keys

of practice and concerts

in the center we would be

***

and  there was a day

that we’d  dance

and we’d play

long into the midnight hours

****

the guitar stands aloof

the keyboard gathers dust

the flute didn’t make it

in the last minute moving rush

***

but there was a day

that we’d  dance

and we’d play

long into the midnight hours

***

someone in another land

still plays the CDs

where our band came together

in a festive jubilee

***

yes there was a day

when we would dance

and we’d play

long into the midnight hours

*******

piano practice

Endless the hours spent

For you alone I would sing

Rusty keys and voice

This week’s Poets United prompt is Melody. What melody plays in the background of your world?

A short back story: I have come to realize that the creative soul dabbles and soars in the pursuit of art. As a child, I had the hours to spend singing, writing, drawing (painting) and playing numerous instruments (at my peak 5). As an adult with children to raise, I had to relegate myself to one. Music was my soul mate and my dearest friend as I raised my family ( I did get the opportunity to travel and perform.) When the opportunities to sing subsided, I once again took up my pen and began to write and now I am drawing again. Though my voice is rusty,  I still have a song  to sing…

Thank you for visiting Moondustwriter. In 2019, we have an exciting project. We are developing elementary curriculum for Ugandan children. As a writer, it is a thrill to help children who want to learn. Along with the curriculum, we hope to develop simple fictions about Uganda for the children to read at school. Trust me books are in short supply. We will use our trusted story tellers: a butterfly and a lion to make the stories come alive. Stay tuned as Bethany and Me put pen to paper. I've been part of the blogging community for more than 10 years. Some old timers may remember the award winning (2012 Twitter Shorty ) blog community - One Stop Poetry. I was the (quiet) originator of the idea and co-producer of One Stop Poetry. I am a published writer, poet, artist and photographer. I have written, as well as edited, for periodicals, radio, blogs and fellow writers. There are many facets to this moon - thanks for stopping by.

  1. How beautifully composed. You lead me from image to image with a chorus for a pause and time to compose myself. I would say so much is lost, if the tone weren’t so uplifting and the melody so sweet.. Now, I wonder, if you have a taped performance to share?

    1. Oh we did at one time but couldn’t tell you where it went. I would miss those days if my life was not so full with writing and rediscovering my love for poetry and art.And the people in the creative fields are each beautiful and fragrant wildflowers!!!

  2. Beautiful poem. Brings me back to the days when I decided to put away my guitar – just too busy with work and life to play. Yes, Leslie, you still have a song to sing. Through words. Keep writing 🙂
