You always were so clever

so out of the box

and I was always so grateful

for the things I was taught

people are different

in so many ways

you study volcanoes

I think of sun’s rays

your mind is a wonder

as I see the gears turn

and I love to watch them

and in that way I learn

Autism’s a label

for some it seems bad

but look at the child

and all that he has

I’ve spent much of my life with children with special needs. I have been enlightened by a precious light and love that I have been showered with. Brian is one boy that was so enthusiastic and loved life. He spoke with his feet and his smile radiated something like the sun. When he passed away as a young adult, I felt the world had lost a sunbeam.

Thank you for visiting Moondustwriter. In 2019, we have an exciting project. We are developing elementary curriculum for Ugandan children. As a writer, it is a thrill to help children who want to learn. Along with the curriculum, we hope to develop simple fictions about Uganda for the children to read at school. Trust me books are in short supply. We will use our trusted story tellers: a butterfly and a lion to make the stories come alive. Stay tuned as Bethany and Me put pen to paper. I've been part of the blogging community for more than 10 years. Some old timers may remember the award winning (2012 Twitter Shorty ) blog community - One Stop Poetry. I was the (quiet) originator of the idea and co-producer of One Stop Poetry. I am a published writer, poet, artist and photographer. I have written, as well as edited, for periodicals, radio, blogs and fellow writers. There are many facets to this moon - thanks for stopping by.

  1. Lovely poem dedicated to children with special needs, Leslie. All of us are unique with different talents and personalities, and it’s so heartening to see people with special needs are getting more respect today. Sure, children with autism etc. might need a bit more help to go about their lives, but at the end of the day they really just want to have a good time like any of us 🙂

  3. So sad that you lost one of those shining children. Truly, I think they bring the most radiant gifts. I work with children on the spectrum, too, and each one is a unique and special soul. Your poem is so poignant. The world did lose a sunbeam. It must have been so hard for you.
