The Bat Beat #Acoli #Uganda #atozchallenge

 side of dirt road

man in bush away from heat

beat beat beat-beat

music stirs my ear

tapping rhythm of my feet

beat beat beat-beat

 white ants bait

“bats good to eat”

beat beat beat-beat

on the side of an orange road

plenty left to eat

beat beat beat-beat

Walking along a quiet road, we encounter children and a man beating a rhythm on a piece of wood. The Acholi man tells us that he is capturing bait for bats. The white ants are collected in handmade clay jars and are a bat delicacy.  I was entranced by the music made as this talented man went about his work.

Thank you for visiting Moondustwriter. In 2019, we have an exciting project. We are developing elementary curriculum for Ugandan children. As a writer, it is a thrill to help children who want to learn. Along with the curriculum, we hope to develop simple fictions about Uganda for the children to read at school. Trust me books are in short supply. We will use our trusted story tellers: a butterfly and a lion to make the stories come alive. Stay tuned as Bethany and Me put pen to paper. I've been part of the blogging community for more than 10 years. Some old timers may remember the award winning (2012 Twitter Shorty ) blog community - One Stop Poetry. I was the (quiet) originator of the idea and co-producer of One Stop Poetry. I am a published writer, poet, artist and photographer. I have written, as well as edited, for periodicals, radio, blogs and fellow writers. There are many facets to this moon - thanks for stopping by.

  1. Hi Leslie – what an amazing video and story line … so interesting … what are the bats used for … fascinating – are the bats fodder? Lovely poem bringing the ‘bat beat’ to our ears … thanks to John for his video .. cheers Hilary

  2. We have bats here but they are on their own when it comes to food. When my front door was painted green they would hang out there every night.
