On a warm summer’s afternoon, it is easy to doze into a nap filled with dreams. The prompt at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai is Nap

This week’s Carpe Diem Haiku Kai writing challenge is to try our hand at Wabi Sabi.

Kristjaan breaks down the two concepts:

“Sabi: As fascinated as Westerners have become with the word, the Japanese have maintained for centuries that no one can really, truly comprehend what sabi really is and thus, they change its definition according to their moods. Bill Higginson, in The Haiku Handbook, calls sabi – “(patina/loneliness) Beauty with a sense of loneliness in time, akin to, but deeper than, nostalgia.” Suzuki maintains that sabi is “loneliness” or“solitude” but that it can also be “miserable”, “insignificant”, and “pitiable”, “asymmetry” and “poverty”. Donald Keene sees sabi as “an understatement hinting at great depths”.

The Technique of Wabi:

The twin brother to sabi who has as many personas can be defined as “(WAH-BEE)-poverty- Beauty judged to be the result of living simply. Frayed and faded Levis have the wabi that bleached designer jeans can never achieve.”

moored

Early the sea fills his nostrils

passion rises in his eyes

dawn glows on his face

she awaits his rough hands

casting off her sails billow

they crash against incoming tide

laughing they meet the day

she tastes the bitter dawn

her steps etched into the widows walk

so many tears shed how many remain

her fingers trace his horizon

crisp white sails against golden sunrise

her heart flutters willing him home

silent prayers for her fisherman

hull

They pulled me from my world

where seals and dolphin play

moonlight bore my charms

she’d glisten and she’d sway

I listen for the splash

feel the foam against my hull

just for one lusty moment

in rolling waves I’m lulled

sea foam line

The wordpress photochallange for the coming week is the Sea. I just spent the week at home (by the sea) so I am overjoyed to share a few shots

She must have really loved him

She must have really loved him

She waited patiently

Year after year

Read letters and cards

Still no one near

She hoped and prayed

For him to be safe

For him to come home

For time to pass

not wanting to be alone

What was it she saw

What was it she feared

Was it being at war

Or just not being near

She loved him the day

He got off the boat

Threw up her arms

threw away her tears

now for what she had hoped
