No Kidding #newcago #noir #flashfiction

As I was hanging on the endless ladder, I heard a sound

“Sam you have had some interesting things cross your path but a goat?”

Somehow it gave me the incentive to climb faster.

There it was like a shoebox diorama of a distant past: a woman reading a book, a kid trotting about an untended grave site, peaceful death.

In angst I sighed.  “The people in NewCago have sacrificed so much for the sake of power and a few coin.”

There was no longer peace in Newcago streets even death was noisy as the ghostly victims could tell you.

Thanks to Rochelle our Fictioneer extraordinaire for the weekly prompts and for Randy Maize and the photo prompt for this week.

This is my final Newcago episode for Friday Fictioneers. I have decided to create a weekly series that will pull some of the elements from these stories and expand on them.

I was through the guarded door.

I realized it was more like a portal to…

The bleeding woman was gone.

Curious, the place seemed somewhat familiar.

I was precariously perched on a ladder with no top and no bottom – just endless rungs.

I could taste the sepia colored air – thick and dank like fires were always ablaze.

From somewhere and nowhere, I heard a bloodcurdling scream.

The scream reverberated in the ladder’s metal.

I knew this was not Newcago.

Tho it seems wherever I go there is mayhem.

For a moment I looked down, considering.

“Climb I must,” I smirked.

NewCago is a noir, metropolitan area that is plagued with a string of perhaps para normal bad guys. Sam (a private detective) seems to be the only one who can stay alive long enough to protect the citizens. How long can his luck last???

Follow Sam as he leaves Newcago and enters another world.

I stood in a daze my mouth agape

out of nowhere came a colorful bus travelling much too fast

Its wheels barely touching the pavement.

I heard a woman scream and then saw her emerge from the bus’ bloody wake

Staggering, she strained toward the guarded doorway

Never acknowledging my presence, she pled with the stoic, holographic image

“Please grant me entrance. I am wounded.”

I shook my head in sadness. ” Poor soul- death’s fog is rolling in.”

To my surprise the barricaded door opened

she stumbled over the threshold

With not a moment of thought, I entered behind her

Last week Sam faced up with a holographic guard who was guarding a passageway the Sam somehow knew he must enter. Follow Sam inside as he unravels the death and deception in New Cago.

… and this is where the clues of my two friends have led me? A stronghold guarded by an elite host.

“Perhaps, the old guard has come to the rescue.”

I grapple with my thoughts  and my hope that someone can help me defeat the foes in Newcago

I focus on his handsome, stoic face. After a long, reflective moment, I realize he is but a holographic image- Another form of deception.

What lies behind the barricaded door?  Ah a portal, a portent of sorts. But where will it lead?

I instinctively know it’s neither safe to enter nor to turn away.

What can you do in 100 words? Write a story? Surely not! Check out the creative mastery of the folks that write for Friday Fictioneers and our hostess Rochell Wisoff- Fields. The excellent photo prompt is by Managua Gunn.

She had tried desperately to make the call for help. What sick bastard had cut the phone receiver off and placed a skull face on duct tape?

I  found her hanging onto the cord.  She was all dolled up on her way to something special.

I was alarmed by the time of day the murder occurred. New Cago crime usually started when the moon rose. This young woman was killed before dusk.

What was to become of the city? Its people?

“Lily,” I shouted.

“They need you darling,” I heard her sweet voice in the breeze.

“Yes, I know.”

This week’s prompt for Friday Fictioneers (hosted by the delightfully inspirational Rochelle) was supplied by Danny Bowman. Looks like budget cuts are in full swing.

This is another 100 word offering being added to a  growing series of stories all set in NewCago. There are many loose strings, unanswered questions about this metropolitan society that is sinking into the mire. Sam seems to be the only one to keep the bad doings at bay but how much longer???

No one in NewCago remembered why the area was barred.

One man went exploring with waders on. Before dawn, he pulled a body out of the aqueduct. The on-duty police were happy behind their bars  so no one observed the nightly doings of the man  in muddy brown. He called them “subjects.”  They were- Subjects of Doom.

Pets were found with life sucked out of them and now a few elderly.

Sam encountered a “subject” on his night off. “More like a shadow taking what it doesn’t possess…” He shook with trepidation.

Weekly Rochelle at Friday Fictioneers hosts a 100 word Flash Fiction. She gives us a photograph as a prompt and then the Fictioneers let their imaginations go. Today the picture is shared by Sarah Ann Hall. Come by and read the fantastic fiction being written this week.

Just for clarity as this is a serial. This is a flashback for Sam before he became the detective of New Cago. Sam’s girlfriend, Lily, died; the cause is yet to be revealed.

Today’s setting is a New Cago bar.

***

“Night Howie” I waved to the on-duty cop stumbling out of the bar.

“Get out of the bottle, Sam,” Lily scowled.

“”What and remember the slime and filth that killed my family?”

“Do some good against the vermin of New Cago,” I could see sadness brewing in Lily’s blue eyes.

***

The only thing I remember was a woman with a deep voice and a vine that was tattooed up her right calf. She suffocated the twins. When mom attacked her with a butcher knife…

Even at 12, I knew who was behind the killing.

***

I’m trying Lily. I’m trying…

Each week we wait patiently (impatiently) for Rochelle to post the week’s  Friday Fictioneers’ picture to prompt us once again to write flash fiction. The picture today is from Ted Strutz. Today I continue with a serial that is staged in the sleepy town of New Cago where the police hide behind bars ( perhaps in bars) and Sam is the only one who can protect the good citizens while they sleep.
