I am Woman #survival #poetry

so many walked

Looking up at the crack in the sidewalk

Unable to scream, I shudder

I feel the concrete about me move

“no please, not again” I mutter

I see the hand ready to strike

I brace myself like steal

I hear a board contact

There’s nothing that I feel

I look out at the falling snow

powdered sugar lightly shaken

oh to be nature pure

what hasn’t man from me taken?

I gather up my will

There are sounds beyond the mist

gentle breezes blow ahead

so many things I’ve missed

I look out at the falling snow

powdered sugar lightly shaken

wishing I could be pure

what hasn’t man from me taken?

You may not know my name

my boots trudge the well known way

“Survivor” I lay claim

with love this path is paved

The prompt this week at Poets United is Survival. The prompt is in recognition of Women around the world who have survived abuse, war, life…  International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Do you know that 70% of women have been raped? (That number is low.) I was part of a group of women writing about the atrocity of rape and how accepted it is in many cultures.  A  male friend of mine commented that it wasn’t a big deal (unless you were a virgin) when you were raped. No comment!

My title Echos a Song by Helen Reddy: I am Woman

The Bottom of the A to Z rung #poetry #photography #atozchallenge

A2Z-2013-BADGE-001Small_zps669396f9 (1)

So many people

from different worlds

all in the same place

A to Z was a whirl

**

stories and history

and puzzles and string

pictures and fantasy

they all had a ring

**

so many choices

you just have to know

if it weren’t for Arlee

it wouldn’t have been a “go”

**

when you think of  challenge

will you think A to Z???

most writers will surely

especially when stuck at Q or Z

Thank you to Arlee Bird who conceived this idea of a challenge that not only includes the letters A to Z but genres A to Z. There are so many talented writers out there with amazing ideas. Spin off challenges could be endless – could they not??

Hats off to the crew who kept things running smoothly.

Personally this year was more of a challenge than last. Though I had all my posts pre-posted (I started in late Jan), I didn’t achieve my goal which was to read and comment on each entrant. I guess for me it’s more realistic to visit/comment on a few and get to know those writers. I am grateful to each person who visited my site and hope to get to know some of you better between now and next April.

For more reflections on a to z

Time is ticking away #death #life #poetry

hour-glass-black-n-white

they asked me when I was a kid

how long they thought i’d live

i said” i don’t know

maybe after the world is covered with snow.”

they asked me when I was a sailor

how long I thought til it was over?

i shook my head,

“my best friend yesterday at 20 was dead”

they asked me when i was a dad

“how long do you think you have?”

“i’d like to be old as a good wine

maybe that would be 99.”

“they asked me how long now that you are 88?”

“it’s waiting for death I hate

i hope ungrateful i do not sound

of life i’d like another round”

This is dedicated to a dear friend who was like my dad as I was growing up. Each day now is  a battle with cancer…
